This rustic design is handwoven of pure cotton in a textured bark weave pattern, then painted with a mixture called sadza—a thick porridge made with maize that is also a popular staple food across the African continent. The fabric is laid out to dry in the sun, then painted and cured in an oven, and finally the dried sadza is scraped off.
